Tampa discusses future of RNC cameras
News

TAMPA, Florida - The city council discussed the future of video surveillance cameras installed in Tampa for security during the Republic National Convention.

The cameras were purchased with federal grant money intended to help the city prepare for the massive event in late August. City leaders and police are now interested in potentially moving the cameras to high crime areas throughout the city.

Representatives from the ACLU are against the continued use of video surveillance calling the cameras an invasion of privacy.

"There is something inertly creepy about being watched in the daily activities of your life," said Mike Pheneger of the Florida ALCU.

Tampa Police and city leaders discussed the issue and consider options for the cameras during Thursday's City Council Meeting downtown.
