Tow truck driver sentenced to 35 years in prison | News
Tampa, Florida -- The owner of a tow truck company has been sentenced to 35 years for shooting and killing a man whose car he was trying to tow.
Donald Montanez, 50, claimed in his trial that he fired his gun in self defense as the man, Glen Rich, drove his car toward him. This was originally argued as a Stand Your Ground case, but the defense dropped the argument during opening statements.
The jury deliberated for 12 hours and on March 1, returned a guilty verdict on all counts, including manslaughter, third degree murder and grand theft auto.
After sentencing Friday, Montanez was placed on suicide watch. With the 35-year mandatory sentence, Montanez would be 85 years old before he could be released from prison.
